I was driving my car last week, creeping along with other morning commuters.
The back up had been caused by, can you believe it, a Mini-Van rear-ending an
SUV. Now there's an unusual traffic phenomenon. Yeah, right. During this
break-tapping crawl, my mind began to wander as it often does. I spied a mass
transit glass and aluminum alcove adorned with an advertisement touting the
release of Jurassic Park III. Now, obviously the folks who post these placards
had not updated this one in quite some time.I began to think, "The Jurassic era was over 65 million years ago." And ask myself, "Self, what era are we currently leaving in?" Although I enjoy the natural sciences, I will admit that my knowledge of the Geological Time Scale or for that matter the science of plate tectonics does allude me. This is when I defer to the esteemed Professor Grundy. Although an acknowledged member of academia, he is also known as Professor "Horse Power". When I presented this question to Professor Grundy, he immediately corrected me. He took a deep breath and stated, " First, there are Eons then Eras then Periods and last Epochs." He then glanced despairingly and mumbled, "Cenozoic, age of the Mammals"  continued...
