For those of you who live in a "temperate zone", you are probably saying to
yourself, "Jeesh, what's with this guy? It's 70 degrees in December? What's
the big deal?" Well my fair weather friends, it's a giant treat to us hardy
New Englanders.
Now, don't get me wrong, I choose to live and drive in the Northeast. I enjoy
each of the four seasons. Even winter. I love how a New England winter becomes
a battle for survival. Just going to the local Mini-Mart can present itself as
a life or death proposition. If you are not geared up with Everest tested
expedition weight outerwear, than you are a tourist and we'll find your frozen
body after the spring thaw.
Normally by December 1st we have endured at least a dozen Nor'easters
(just like in the movie The Perfect Storm only with feet of snow and a lot worse).
This time last year, we had to climb out of the second story windows and walk
to school in the snow uphill, both ways.
I suppose by the time this issue goes to print, I mean to the web, we here in
New England will be bracing ourselves against the oncoming glacial flow.
I am also sure I would have implemented the use of a snorkel to allow breathing
through the snowdrifts. Be that as it may, I will re-read this column and
reminisce about the wonderful 70 degree anomaly that we experienced on December
1st.
Is it Spring yet?
